As a well established accounting and business advisory practice, we pride ourselves on being intentionally different and working hard for our clients. We also like to work equally as hard for our wider local community too.
Nicklin Charitable Trust
With this in mind, in 2013, we set up the Nicklin Charitable Trust in order to raise funds for the many worthwhile and deserving charities in and around the Black Country, Birmingham and Worcestershire. We recognise the importance of supporting those around us whether it be through fundraising, dedicating our time or offering work opportunities.
The West Midlands is home to many of the charities who depend on funding to exist. The families and individual’s who use these charities, rely on them to offer support, guidance and sometimes even a bed for the night. Picking which charities to support is a difficult decision, as they are all worthy, but in 2013 we have supported, among others, the following charities:
- Acorns Children’s Hospice offers a network of care for life limited and life threatened children and young people, and their families, across the heart of England. These children and young people are not expected to reach adulthood and require specialist care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Acorns is currently supporting around 640 children and nearly 900 families, including those who are bereaved.
- The Emily Jordan Foundation helps young adults with moderate learning disabilities, to learn new skills to eventually enable them to either enter the workplace or otherwise contribute to society.
- Children in Need provide grants to projects in the UK which focus on children and young people who are disadvantaged. They are local to people in all corners of the UK and support small and large organisations which empower children and extend their life choices.
In April, Nicklin held a golf day at Wharton Park in Bewdley, and with the help of our supporters, Stratstone Land Rover, we raised £3,000 for the charity. On behalf of all the team at Nicklin, a cheque was presented by the partners PA, Wendy Hayward, to Carole Crowe, Community Fundraising Manager for the Worcester branch of the charity. “On behalf of all the children and young people who come to Acorns, I thank you for the very kind and generous donation. We really do appreciate your support and special thanks go to everyone involved.”
In October we sponsored a golf day, held by the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber at the Worcester Golf Club in Malvern Wells. Guest speaker Peter McGovern, former head professional at The Belfry, and a fast paced auction, helped raise funds of over £4,000 for the foundation.
On Friday 15th November we challenged our staff to see how well they really know each other by trying to guess the name of their colleagues from their baby photo. It was the talk of the office for the week leading up to the Friday and was a great success with the partners kindly offering to match any funds raised.
Over the year we have also supported the work of the Mary Stevens Hospice, the RSPCA and for Christmas 2013, instead of sending each other Christmas cards, the staff will be donating toys to the Hope Santa Appeal, run by Dudley Council for Voluntary Service, which helps to bring smiles to the faces of local disadvantaged children and young people at Christmas time. With the partners kindly donating £250 towards the appeal, we hope to donate much needed toys, books and games to this very worthy appeal.
At Nicklin, we are proud of our efforts to support local charities. Harvey Owen, managing partner said: “As a firm, we believe it is important to give something back to our local community. Staff wholeheartedly get involved, donating not just their money but volunteering their spare time too.”
We recognise the importance of supporting the younger generations through various work based placements and internships and are always happy to discuss the accounting world and the opportunities it can bring. Since January 2013 we have welcomed eight students to Nicklin to experience the world of a busy accountancy firm, ranging from one week work experience placements to 3-month internships.
Jack Simmonds joined us in August for a 3-month internship, having graduated from King Edward VI College, Stourbridge and before heading to university. “I came to Nicklin not knowing what to expect as I had never worked in an office environment before. However after settling in, I have gained a good insight into the financial side of business, which is what I was hoping to do during my time with Nicklin. The staff have been very welcoming and helpful and have further helped me through the transition period from college to the workplace.”
Early on in 2013 we sponsored an economics debating competition at Haybridge High School Sixth Form which saw students being asked to argue for and against a view or statement relating to an economics issue. Winner Liam Dodd was presented with an award by partner Chris Cook, who said, “At Nicklin, we have a long tradition of supporting our local schools and colleges, recognising that the outstanding students of today could go on to become the business leaders of tomorrow.”.
In November a further award was presented to student Victoria Homer at Redhill Academy, Stourbridge for her performance in her GCSE Business Studies as well as her hard workand performance throughout the year.
Our ongoing commitment to local businesses in our community is further demonstrated by the recognition we have received through various awards. These include being named winner of the Legal and Business Advisory Category at the Birmingham Post Business Awards. Partner Mark Howell said, “This success would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the team at Nicklin, who have ensured that, as a firm, we really do have something to shout about.”
We have also enjoyed success after being named ‘Accountancy Firm of the Year (more than five partners)’ in the ICAEW West Midlands Chartered Accountant of the Year Awards in May – our fifth time of winning the accolade.
Through successes like these, and supported by our ongoing commitment to staff training and development, local businesses can benefit from our professional expertise.
